Verona and the River Adige has a love/hate relationship. The second longest river in Italy, the Adige rises in the Alta Val Venosta and comes to Verona, making broad curves around the city. Like every great river, it has been both a source of great wealth for Verona and a cause of immense destruction. Over time, the river's course has been diverted and tamed by human hands. Now it is no longer feared as it had been in the past. Just think that Verona was once situated much lower, but constant floods deposited so much mud and debris that it raised the level of the city!
