Tour Itinerary
The Medici Chapels mainly consist of the New Sacristy and the Chapel of the Princes. Upon entering, you first access the crypt, where the tombstones of the grand dukes and their consorts are visible. Two staircases then lead to the majestic Chapel of the Princes, a grand Baroque-style family mausoleum.
The New Sacristy, commissioned in 1521 by Pope Leo X of the Medici dynasty, was entrusted to Michelangelo, who demonstrated his genius as both architect and sculptor by modifying the layout of Brunelleschi’s earlier Old Sacristy. On the side walls, you can admire the monumental tombs of Giuliano, Duke of Nemours, and his nephew Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino, featuring the allegories of Time: Day and Night for Giuliano, Twilight and Dawn for Lorenzo.
Michelangelo left the work unfinished: Lorenzo the Magnificent rests beneath the altar, but without the monumental tomb originally planned.
