Visiting the Accademia Gallery in Florence
The "David's Museum" and other sculptures by Michelangelo

Galleria Accademia Firenze

The Accademia Gallery is a must-see for those coming to Florence. It is second only to the Uffizi for number of visitors. This small museum is known around the world as Michelangelo's museum, as several of the celebrated artist's iconic works are here, including the most renowned of all: David.
The first major masterpiece in the Accademia's first room is by another sculptor, also famed in Florence and beyond: Giambologna. The plaster model of the Rape of the Sabine Women makes an impression both for its size and the dynamic quality of the nudes. Three bodies entwine in a vertical flight rising 4 meters high, dramatically demonstrating the Flemish artist's incredible talent.
As we move into the next room, we find the first Michelangelo pieces, the Slaves lining the sides of the corridor. Nineteenth-century critics named them "The Young Slave", the "Awakening Slave," the "Bearded Slave," and "Atlas." The sculpture group is exceptional for showing us Michelangelo's long working process in these "unfinished work," unintentionally showing the works in their incompleteness.

At the end of this same corridor, rising 5 meters high is the piece of marble that has become an icon of Florence around the world: David. Among the qualities that make this sculpture a masterpiece are its perfection, its harmony, and its sense of tension. The religious subject gained political importance, playing a role in the political affairs of Medici-ruled Florence. Despite the sculpture's enormous size, sublime attention is given to the tiniest details. David's eyes fixed are fixed on his foe, Goliath, curls of his hair and the veins along his body are among the details that make him a work of art that we never tire of and absolutely must be seen.
