Itinerary of guided tour of the Accademia Gallery
This tour lasts approximately 2 hours. The tour can be customized to meet specific visitor requests. The tour includes a detailed description of the story of Michelangelo, his life, his artistic development, his genius, and his art, which is well-represented here.

Museum: The Accademia Gallery
The Accademia Gallery is best known as home to the world's most famous statue — Michelangelo's majestic David — but it also holds many other must-see artistic treasures. A guided tour inside this major museum will help you understand Michelangelo's genius and his artistic evolution in sculpture: from David to the four famous unfinished statues intended for Pope Julius II's tomb — the Slaves— and the Palestrina Pietà.
Grand Duke Peter Leopold founded the museum in the 18th century as a collection of paintings. In 1873, it was chosen to exhibit Michelangelo's David, moved from its outdoor location in the Piazza della Signoria. The great masterpiece displays young Michelangelo's genius. The symbol of the freedom of the Florentine Republic in the early 16th century, David stands tall over the museum hall built specifically for it by the architect De Fabris.
Other Michelangelo statues were later brought here, turning the Gallery ever after into "Michelangelo's museum." These included the four unfinished Slaves, intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II, but never sent to Rome, St. Matthew for Florence's Duomo, also never finished, and the Palestrina Pietà, attributed to a mature Michelangelo.
