The Museum - History and useful tips
The Uffizi Gallery is far and away Florence's most important and visited museum, a major destination for the tourists who flock to Florence every year.
In the heart of Florence's historic center, this major museum is right next to Palazzo Vecchio, the present-day seat of Florence's city government. The Uffizi Palace, home to the Uffizi Gallery, is a magnificent specimen of Renaissance architecture. Giorgio Vasari designed it at the behest of Grand Duke Cosimo I de ' Medici. Construction began in 1560. Its original purpose was to hold Florence's administrative offices. The Uffizi Palace has a unique "U" shape, connecting Piazza della Signoria and the banks of the Arno River, flowing just a few steps from the Uffizi.
The Uffizi Gallery building is in itself an attraction unique in the world. The majestic building has three facades, a ground-floor portico and large windows on the upper floors. Despite the building's huge dimensions, its architecture gives it a sense of lightness and elegance.
Uffizi Gallery: the tour
The tour of the Uffizi Gallery starts from the ground floor portico. The Uffizi square is usually packed with tourists waiting to get into the museum. By booking skip-the-line tickets, you only need to go to door no. 3 and exchange your voucher for tickets to go through the turnstiles. We suggest arriving 15 minutes before the booked time.
Then you enter the museum through the special entrance for those with reservations. After the turnstiles and security check, your tour gets underway!
The exhibition rooms are on the museum's upper floors, which we can reach on a grand staircase (or by elevator, if preferred). The artworks are displayed in chronological order. The rooms are organized around themes, with some focused on a single artist, such as the Botticelli rooms.
The Uffizi's great corridors are much to be admired with their elaborately decorated ceilings and filled with an extensive collection of ancient statues from the Roman era. Leading to the exhibition rooms, their large windows afford breathtaking views.
Uffizi Gallery: Exhibition rooms and artists
The Uffizi Gallery hosts an enormous collection of paintings of great import:
from Cimabue's Romanesque painting, Gothic revolution, to the elaborate decorations of Gentile da Fabriano's late Gothic art. The innovations of the Renaissance are seen in art by Masaccio, Paolo Uccello, Piero della Francesca, and Filippo Lippi. Florence's great era, spearheaded by Lorenzo Il Magnifico, is shown in Sandro Botticelli's masterpieces: the Birth of Venus and the Allegory of Spring. The grand tour of the museum continues with paintings by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo's only known painting, the renowned Tondo Doni. Here, you can also appreciate celebrated works by Raphael, followed by Titian's art. Definitely not to miss are the Caravaggio rooms, where the Bacchus and Medusa are found along with works by his followers, including the famed Artemisia Gentileschi. The museum tour ends with 18th-century neoclassical painting, a prelude to modern art.
