The Museum – History and useful tips

Located behind the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the building was commissioned by Cosimo I as a mausoleum in honor of the Medici dynasty. The Medici Chapel, designed by Matteo Nigetti, includes the Chapel of the Princes and the New Sacristy.

The Chapel of the Princesis evidence of the magnificent work of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure (semi-precious stone workshop) as it is completely covered in marble and semi-precious stones; the Grand Dukes of Tuscany are buried here. The New Sacristy was commissioned by Pope Leo X and construction started in 1520, built to hold the remains of Lorenzo Il Magnifico's family.

Medici Chapel: The tour

Entrance to the Medici Chapel is allowed from Piazza Madonna degli Aldobrandini. By booking skip-the-line tickets, you only need to exchange your voucher at the ticket office and avoid waiting in long lines. We will continue towards the crypt, which holds four niches with the remains of the Medici Grand Dukes and their wives, including Giovanni delle Bande Nere, Maria Salviati, and Anna Maria Luisa de ' Medici. Going up the stairs, we come to the majestic Chapel of the Princes, an icon of the Medici's self-celebration, which Cosimo I commissioned and Ferdinand I had completed. The rooms adjacent to the Chapel of the Princes hold the Treasury of San Lorenzo, with some hundred reliquaries belonging to the Medici family. The tour ends in the famous New Sacristy, a sublime work by Michelangelo Buonarroti.

Medici Chapel: Exhibition rooms and artists

The Medici Chapel includes the Chapel of the Princes and the New Sacristy. The crypt holds the remains of the Grand Dukes, and it also has the Sepulcher of Cosimo il Vecchio and the remains of the sculptor Donatello.

The Chapel of the Princes is based on Matteo Nigetti's design. Semi-precious stone materials from the Opificio delle Pietre Dure [semi-precious stone workshop] were used both for the architectural structure and decoration. After going through the Treasury of San Lorenzo, we'll stop in the museum's most iconic room: the New Sacristy.

A true treasure trove, this small space holds seven statues by Michelangelo: the monument to Giuliano, Duke of Nemours, Day and Night, and the monument to Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino, Dawn and Dusk.

Medici Chapel: Useful information
