Guided tour itinerary of Florence's Duomo Complex, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
An unforgettable guided tour of Florence's Duomo complex, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence's religious core, and one of the undisputed masterpieces of all time! The guided tour includes the tour of Giotto's Bell Tower (414 stairs - no lift), the Baptistery of Florence, its famous mosaic-adorned dome, the Duomo, in its full grandeur and beauty, (no entrance into the cathedral). The tour continues to the Opera del Duomo Museum, which houses the original Gates of Paradise from the Baptistery, which have been recently restored, Donatello's Mary Magdalene, and Michelangelo's Pietà.

DUOMO COMPLEX, CATHEDRAL OF SANTA MARIA DEL FIORE

Construction was started on the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, known as the Duomo, in 1296, commissioned by the Signoria of Florence, the city government. The cathedral is the symbol of Florence, Brunelleschi's famed dome, which makes it even more important because it is the largest masonry dome ever built. And inside you see the largest surface ever frescoed, the work of Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari.
The polychrome marble facade is made of white Carrara marble and green serpentine marble from Prato.
The guided tour continues inside the Baptistery, which is the same polychrome marble as the Cathedral. Here you can appreciate its famous dome, divided into eight segments, its ceiling fully adorned in mosaic. The guided tour of the Duomo complex ends in the Opera del Duomo Museum, which has the largest concentration of Florentine monumental sculptures anywhere in the world, including medieval statues and reliefs and Renaissance sculptures in marble, bronze, and silver.
The masterpieces at the Opera del Duomo museum include Lorenzo Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, which was recently restored, and Donatello's
Mary Magdalene. Booking a guided tour of the Duomo complex gives you a chance to admire Florence from on high. The tour price includes a ticket to climb Giotto's Bell Tower and Brunelleschi's dome. If you haven't seen the entire Duomo complex, you can't say you have truly seen Florence!
