RAPHAEL TOUR ITINERARY

First Module – Raphael in the Vatican

This tour offers an in-depth look at the masterpieces of Raffaello Sanzio housed in the Vatican Museums. The first part is dedicated to the Raphael Rooms, frescoed by the master and his pupils for the apartments of Pope Julius II.

The second part takes place in the Vatican Pinacoteca, where Room VIII is entirely dedicated to Raphael and houses three famous altarpieces: Madonna of Foligno, Pala degli Oddi, and The Transfiguration. The Pala degli Oddi depicts Christ crowning the Virgin, surrounded by angels and apostles. The Madonna of Foligno shows Saint Jerome presenting the patron Sigismondo de’ Conti to the Virgin, thanking her for saving his house from a lightning strike. Finally, The Transfiguration portrays Christ with Moses, Elijah, and the apostles, while the lower section narrates the healing of a boy possessed by a demon.

This tour is the perfect opportunity to discover Raphael’s most iconic works and understand the greatness of the master of Roman Renaissance art.

Second Module – Raphael in Rome

The second part of the tour takes place on foot through the streets of Rome, allowing you to admire two of Raphael’s masterpieces housed in two churches in the city, ending at the Pantheon, where the master is buried.

The first stop is the Basilica of Sant’Agostino in Campo Marzio, near Piazza Navona, famous for Raphael’s fresco The Prophet Isaiah, and Caravaggio’s Madonna of Loreto, donated to the church while the painter was hiding there to avoid arrest.

The tour continues to Santa Maria della Pace, where you can admire the Chigi Chapel, designed by Raphael, and the arch fresco with the Sibyls and angels.

Finally, the tour reaches the Pantheon, one of Rome’s most iconic monuments, admired for its majestic dome, harmonious proportions, and extraordinary interior decorations. In addition to its unique architecture, the Pantheon is steeped in legends and houses Raphael’s tomb. The guide will explain the history, architectural features, and secrets of this remarkable monument, concluding the tour at the resting place of the great Renaissance master.
