Itinerary of the Private Capitoline Museums Tour
The tour begins in Piazza del Campidoglio, located on the summit of the Capitoline Hill and designed by Michelangelo at the request of Pope Paul III Farnese. The trapezoidal-shaped square is surrounded by the three main buildings—the Senatorial Palace, the Palace of the Conservators, and the Palazzo Nuovo—and embellished with classical sculptures and an elegant pavement design. Your guide will explain Michelangelo’s architectural innovations and the details that make the square one of the most evocative places in Rome.
The visit continues inside the Capitoline Museums, housed in the Palace of the Conservators and the Palazzo Nuovo. The tour starts in the courtyard of the Palace of the Conservators and then proceeds to the first floor, where the classical collections and the picture gallery are displayed. Highlights include the bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the lion attacking the horse, and the colossal head of Constantine. On the second floor, a short coffee break is scheduled, with access to the panoramic terrace.
The visit then continues to the Palazzo Nuovo, reached through the evocative Gallery of the Tabularium, offering views over the Roman Forum. Inside, the courtyard featuring the statue of Marforio immediately captures visitors’ attention, before concluding the tour with the exploration of the collections displayed in the palace.
