Tour itinerary of Castel Sant'Angelo and St. Peter's Square with private guide
The tour starts from Castel Sant'Angelo, the Papal fortress and one of the places in Rome that tourists appreciate the most.
The entrance to the spectacular Ponte Sant'Angelofeature states of Saints Peter and Paul, and lined up along the bridge are statues depicting the ten angels of the Passion, two of which Bernini sculpted. The castle is not just a place connected to the Vatican: the original structure was built as a mausoleum and then became a prison. Among its most famous prisoners was Benvenuto Cellini, famed for his daring escape.
The castle's prisons are the perfect setting of the final act of Giacomo Puccini's timeless masterpiece, Tosca. The tour continues to St. Peter's Square, the largest work of Baroque architecture. The colonnade topped by 140 statues welcomes everyone into the heart of Catholicism. Bernini spent eleven years working on the square.
He applied his architectural skill to create a square with a completely unprecedented spiral plan! The resulting space frames St. Peter's Basilica, Rome's most important basilica. The final design lends it an air of elegant solemnity, enhanced with many symbolic references to politics and religion, using original construction techniques.
Spend three hours discovering two of the iconic places of Rome's religious world, landmarks for their beauty and the fascinating history tell.
