Tour itinerary of Castel Sant'Angelo and the Pantheon
The walking tour starts from Castel Sant'Angelo.
We're right behind St. Peter's, a few steps from the world's most important religious center. The Castel Sant'Angelo has one of the oldest histories in Rome, dating to around 123 AD, built to hold the remains of the Roman emperor Hadrian and his family. Considered one of the most important monuments for the city's history, it underwent many changes over the centuries. Pope Nicholas III linked the castle, physically and conceptually, to the Vatican, having the Passetto di Borgo built, a passageway the Pope can use to escape inside the castle in case of attack. Castel Sant'Angelo's fortification has made it suited to holding the Vatican archive, and it has been used as a courthouse and a jail as well. Our guide will tell you all about the illustrious figures who were locked up here, the unique story about the origin of its name, and will show you the interior and its ramparts, the mausoleum, and the passageway. The tour will continue towards Ponte Sant'Angelo, where a succession of Bernini's statues stretches out before you, perfectly framing one of the best-loved views of Rome for tourists and Romans alike.
We'll cross the Tiber and come to the Pantheon. Few buildings have so many legends attached to them. The outside will amaze you, and the inside will leave you awestruck.
The oculus is the single source of light for the largest dome ever built in the world. The light effect this creates inside is breathtaking. You will feel as if the dome is embracing you as an essential part of one of the most beautiful works of architecture ever built.
The Pantheon's majesty is underscored by the square where it stands, Piazza della Rotonda, the center of which features a Renaissance fountain designed by Giacomo della Porta.
Depending on the museums' availability and your needs, the itinerary can be changed, starting with the Pantheon and ending with a tour of Castel Sant'Angelo.
