PRIVATE TOUR ITINERARY: ROYAL PALACE OF TURIN

Your exclusive visit to the Royal Palace of Turin will take you through one of Europe’s most historically documented royal residences of the 18th century. Travelers of the time marveled at its grandeur, from its vast halls and gilded ceilings to the intricate tapestries, crystal chandeliers, finely inlaid furniture, and everyday objects adorned with gems and gold.

Overlooking one of Turin’s most beautiful squares, the Royal Palace was the seat of the House of Savoy for more than 300 years. Its refined stuccoes and carvings earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997. This extraordinary building, blending architectural styles from the 17th to the 19th century, was a key reason Turin became Italy’s first capital.

Originally commissioned in 1584 by Carlo Emanuele I to architect Ascanio Vitozzi, the palace was later expanded under Amedeo di Castellamonte and Carlo Morello in the late 17th century, with interiors adorned with gold, stucco, and grand allegorical paintings. In 1688, Daniel Seyter decorated the gallery now known as the “Daniel Gallery” and the ground-floor apartment of Madama Felicita. In 1713, when Turin became the capital, new “command rooms” were added, housing offices, chancelleries, and barracks.

The tour begins at the first floor, reached via the grand staircase decorated with paintings and statues by Domenico Ferri. Highlights include:

  • Grand Hall of the Swiss Guards with Palma il Giovane’s depiction of Emanuele Filiberto at the Battle of San Quintino
  • Gallery of the Holy Shroud, Gallery of Battles, Scissors Staircase by Filippo Juvarra, and a series of representative rooms
  • Room of the Bodyguards, Room of the Staffieri, and the Room of Pages, notable for their magnificent ceilings and intricate decorations
  • Throne Room featuring Jan Miel’s Allegory of Peace, the Audience Room, the Council Room, and Filippo Juvarra’s Chinese Cabinet with frescoes by Claudio Francesco di Beaumont
  • Queen’s Apartments, including the bedroom, working room, toilette, maids’ room, and the Queen’s Chapel, exuding elegance and femininity
  • Ballroom, adorned with white marble columns

The second and final step of the tour is the Royal Armoury, one of the richest collections of arms and armor in Europe. Key pieces include the Sword of Saint Maurice, the armor of Emanuele Filiberto, and a sword that belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte.
