WHAT IS THE ATLANTIC CODEX?

For the first time internationally displayed, the pages of Leonardo's great work—1,750 drawings and 100 manuscript pages on 1,119 sheets, collected in 12 volumes—represent the largest collection of drawings and writings by the Tuscan genius. The exhibition was organized by the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana and the Cardinal Federico Borromeo Foundation, in collaboration with the Municipality of Milan and Expo 2015.

The Atlantic Codex is a collection of drawings and writings by Leonardo da Vinci, divided into 12 volumes and compiled by sculptor Pompeo Leoni at the end of the 16th century. It is housed in Milan at two locations: the Ambrosian Library (22 sheets), located near the Cathedral, and the Bramante Sacristy (the other 22 sheets), located at the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The Library has held it since 1637. The name "Atlantic Codex" derives from the size of its pages, which make it aesthetically similar to a geographical atlas of the time. The 1,119 sheets testify to Leonardo’s genius between 1478 and 1519 and are assembled without a specific order.

A large restoration project in Lazio took place between 1962 and 1972. The drawings cover a wide range of topics, from anatomy to botany, studies on the flight of birds, architectural projects, and there are also pages with personal notes, recipes, and reflections. All the sheets have been disbound and separated in preparation for digitization, which will make the codex a heritage of all humanity, improving not only its exhibition but also its preservation. Currently, about 400 sheets are available for consultation, each with a title and a brief description written by the Latinist and historian Augusto Marinoni.
