The Museum – History and useful tips
The Bargello Museum is famed for having been the seat of the "Captain of the People" starting in 1574. It is considered one of the world's most important museums for its Renaissance sculpture collection.
On Via del Proconsolo, not far from the famous Florentine Abbey, the Bargello is in Florence's historic center, and it was the city seat before Palazzo Vecchio.
Built between 1255 and 1261, it incorporated a pre-existing building and was expanded several times. The courtyard dates to about 1295 and its majestic grand staircase is the work of the architect Neri di Fioravanti.
Over its many centuries, it has been the site of a courthouse, a city police headquarters, and a prison. Leopold II of Tuscany started renovations on it in 1857, and moved the prisons, turning the Bargello into the present-day museum in 1865.
The Bargello National Museum is also famed for its collections of applied art, ancient objects, and marble pieces.

Bargello Museum: The tour
The tour of the Bargello Museum starts from its majestic courtyard and grand staircase adorned with stone and glazed terracotta coats of arm, and the portico where there is a collection of sculptures by artists the likes of Ammannati and Giambologna.
We suggest arriving at the museum 15 minutes before the booked time. During high season, the last admission is at 3:00 pm.
Once you have exchanged your voucher for a ticket and gone through security, the tour begins.
After the sculpture courtyard and the grand staircase, we come to the eastern side of the courtyard of the 14th-century hall. The exhibition spaces are organized by theme. The tour continues to the Michelangelo room. In the first-floor loggia, we can appreciate some 19th-century frescoes done in medieval style and some 16th-century art.
The General Council room, also known, as the Donatello Room is a must-see, home to Donatello's bronze David.

National Museum Bargello: Exhibition rooms and artists
The National Bargello Museum has one of the most important sculpture collections from the 14th to the 17th centuries, with sculptures by famed artists, such as Michelangelo, Giambologna, and Donatello. Here, you can also appreciate busts by Verrocchio, Antonio del Pollaiolo, and many pieces by the Della Robbia brothers.
Of great import are also the ceramics, the Medici bronzes, and the wonderful Carrand collection, including major ceramic pieces, glazes, and small paintings. The tour ends in the Armory Hall where the Medici arms are exhibited along with some from private collections.
